Tocuaro
Population 1,000
Tocuaro
is a small village, known for mask carvings, but not for Day of the Dead
celebrations. For the traveler looking for the less trampled path, Tocuaro
offers a chance to observe the holiday quietly.
In
the afternoon on November 2nd. people gather at the cemetery located in
the churchyard. Rather like a picnic, families sit by their loved ones
graves eating and socializing with their neighbors. Theres lots
of laughter - children play on unattended graves, dogs run free and plates
of food are share with guests.
Its
a party until sunset, when everyone returns home.
